Why Bohol to Camiguin Is Worth the Effort

Camiguin is one of those islands that travelers discover and immediately wish they’d planned more time for. It’s volcanic, tiny, and packed with natural hot springs, waterfalls, sunken cemeteries, and pristine dive sites. The catch? It’s not on any major fast ferry route. Getting there from Bohol requires a bit of planning — which is exactly why most tour operators don’t touch this route, and why we do.

The direct ferry from Jagna to Camiguin runs daily. Miss the afternoon departure and you’re waiting until tomorrow. That’s the kind of detail that catches travelers off guard, and it’s exactly the kind of thing I coordinate for travelers every week.

The Route: Step by Step

1

Overland Transfer: Tagbilaran / Panglao → Jagna Port

Most Bohol visitors stay in the Tagbilaran or Panglao area. Jagna Port is on the eastern coast of Bohol, approximately 2 hours by car from Tagbilaran. The road passes through the Bohol interior — it's scenic but winding, passing through small towns and rice terraces.

You need to arrive at Jagna Port at least 1 hour before the ferry departure. That means leaving your hotel 3 hours before sailing time.

2

Ferry: Jagna Port → Balbagon Terminal, Camiguin

Super Shuttle Ferry's RORO vessel departs from Jagna Port. Unlike OceanJet fast ferries, this is a traditional roll-on/roll-off ferry — slower but more spacious. You can bring vehicles, motorcycles, and larger luggage without issue. The vessel has open-air deck seating and an enclosed passenger cabin.

3

Arrival: Balbagon Terminal, Camiguin

Balbagon is on the northern coast of Camiguin. From the terminal, most destinations on the island are within 20–40 minutes by motorbike or habal-habal (motorcycle taxi). Camiguin is small enough to drive around in about 2 hours.

Daily Departures from Jagna

The Jagna–Camiguin ferry now runs daily. The ferry departs Jagna at 2:30 PM, arriving Camiguin around 7:00 PM. No need to plan your Bohol stay around specific departure days.

Fares may vary seasonally. Super Shuttle Ferry typically sells tickets at the port counter on the day of travel, but advance booking through a travel agent ensures you have a confirmed seat, especially during peak season.

What to Expect on the Ferry

This isn’t an OceanJet fast craft with assigned airline-style seats. The Super Shuttle RORO is a working ferry — the lower deck carries vehicles and cargo, the upper decks have passenger seating. There are two options: an air-conditioned enclosed cabin with bench-style seating, or open-air deck areas where you can watch the water go by.

The ferry has basic facilities: a small canteen selling snacks and instant noodles, restrooms, and plenty of space to move around. Bring water, snacks, and something to read. If you’re prone to seasickness, take medication before boarding — the crossing can be choppy, especially during monsoon months.

Ann's Packing Tip

Bring a light jacket or hoodie for the air-conditioned cabin (it can get cold). If you're sitting on deck, sunscreen and a hat are essential — 4.5 hours of open ocean sun is no joke. A small daypack with water, snacks, and a phone charger is all you need for the crossing. Your main luggage stays in the cargo area.

The Smart Way: Ferry + Hotel Pickup in One Booking

Don't risk missing the daily 2:30 PM ferry. We pick you up from your hotel, drive you 2 hours to Jagna Port, and put you on the ferry with time to spare. One booking covers everything.

Getting to Jagna Port: Your Options

The most comfortable and reliable option. A private car or van picks you up directly from your hotel in Tagbilaran, Panglao, or anywhere in Bohol and drives you straight to Jagna Port. Travel time is approximately 2 hours. When you book through Travel in Bohol, we include this overland transfer and time it so you arrive at Jagna with a comfortable buffer before the ferry departure.

Option 2: Public Bus

Ceres buses run from Tagbilaran’s Dao Bus Terminal to Jagna. The journey takes about 2–2.5 hours and costs around PHP 100–150. Buses depart regularly but don’t operate on a strict schedule. Allow extra time to account for stops and unpredictable departure times. This works for budget travelers but adds uncertainty on a route where missing the ferry means waiting until the next day.

Option 3: Motorbike

If you’ve rented a motorbike in Bohol, you can ride to Jagna and take the bike on the RORO ferry to Camiguin (additional cargo fee). The road is paved and scenic but narrow in parts. Only recommended for experienced riders.

The Alternative Route: Via Cagayan de Oro

If the Jagna–Camiguin schedule doesn’t work for your dates, there’s a longer alternative. Fly or sail from Cebu to Cagayan de Oro (Mindanao), then take a ferry from Balingoan Port to Benoni Port, Camiguin (about 1.5 hours). This route has more frequent sailings but adds significant time and complexity — it’s essentially a full day of travel versus the direct 4.5-hour crossing from Bohol.

The Jagna direct ferry is almost always the better option if your dates align with the daily departure schedule.

Camiguin to Bohol: The Return

The return ferry also runs daily, departing Balbagon at 9:30 AM from Balbagon Terminal back to Jagna Port. Same 4.5-hour crossing, same operator. The daily schedule means you have flexibility on when to return. Most travelers spend 2–4 nights on Camiguin, which makes it easy to align with the ferry schedule.

What to Do in Camiguin

Camiguin calls itself the “Island Born of Fire” — it has more volcanoes per square kilometer than any other island in the world. Don’t worry, they’re dormant. The main attractions include the Sunken Cemetery (a cross rising from the sea), White Island (a sand bar with volcano views), Katibawasan Falls, Ardent Hot Springs, and some of the best diving in the Philippines at Mantigue Island. Two to four nights gives you enough time to circle the island and hit all the highlights.
